Volunteer recruitment and selection to TKMOAMS can be described through a series of seven steps:
- A needs assessment is undertaken in most affected areas. Such areas are identified from statistics collected from HIV counselling office in all Northern District Hospital (communities with most people testing positive for HIV).
- TKMOAMS program staff introduces the programme to the community leaders, such as village headman, pastors, councillors. If the leaders accept the program in the community, they will be requested to identify potential people who can become volunteers.
- After identification of potential volunteers, TKMOAMS will provide application form for pre – screening and final selection.
- TKMOAMS trains the selected people as home based care volunteers at the moment we are using Catholic Aids Action training curriculum and the training takes three month.
- On completion of the training curriculum a graduation ceremony is held to which the all stakeholders are invited, this including regional governor, councillors, Traditional Authority and all active members of the community.
- After graduation the village headman introduces the new volunteer to the community (as a community counsellor or home based care giver) before they start visiting homesteads in their community. Thereafter, the volunteer can proceed to carrying out their duties on their own.
- Supervision and support. Soon after new volunteers have started working, TKMOAMS staff start supporting them by visiting the volunteers in their communities on a monthly basis, this is to ensure that volunteers are providing quality services to their clients.
